Make a wooden coat rack

Build a wall rack with angled wooden hooks, a carved welcome and shelf, or surfboard-shaped parts. Explore real builds, open their shared designs and start a backplate layout in Easel.

Start from a blank workpiece

Draw a backplate and space three hardware positions

Watch a new blank workpiece become a six-by-three-inch rectangular backplate with three evenly spaced holes. Add a square, resize it and choose an outside outline cut. Add three circles, position them along the middle and set their cut depth to the stock thickness. The native 3D preview shows the holes through the board. This small layout demonstrates the controls, not a finished rack or screw specification. Resize the board for your hooks, match each hole to your chosen hardware and plan separate wall fixings before making a load-bearing rack.

Cut wooden hooks, add a shelf or hang hats on fins

A narrow hook rail suits jackets by the door. A shelf adds space for small objects, while a surfboard rack can hold towels and hats. Choose the shape and assembly that fit your room.

Round the fin edges after carving

Tonks sands the fins after cutting to give them a curved hydrofoil shape and expose the plywood layers. The flat outline is only the start of that rounded finish. He also specifies both glue and screws for joining fins to the backboard, then sealing the wood. Decide how you will shape and attach the hooks before choosing the board thickness.

Keep X and Y fixed when changing rack operations

For his wood-and-wire racks, Burdett holds blanks in shallow fixture pockets and keeps the same X and Y origin through the sequence. He resets Z to the top of the blanks for slotting, then resets it again after changing to the keyhole cutter. That distinction matters when several operations share one fixture: preserve the horizontal reference while measuring each new tool's height.
